Today project management is an indispensible part of any business. Radically changing business requirements and escalating prices for purchasing and supporting project management software, online or web-based project management and collaboration tools are striving to take the share of the market.

First of all we need to determine the meaning of "web-based project management software". Project management software helps in applying skills, knowledge and techniques in planning and controlling project costs, resources, schedules. It provides high level of collaboration, where project team members can easily communicate, share ideas and knowledge; manage their time and project deliverables online, real time

So here are some of the features and ideas, that you might want to look into before you decide to use project management software.

  • Security. You will be sharing and managing all your information online, so double check what security measures were taken to protect, in most cases, vital to your business information. SSL security availability is a simple must I think.
  • Permissions. This is another very important part of the system, you need total access control on the users: because I am sure that different users will take part in different project etc, and lets not forget clients .So the permission system should be powerful, but yet easy to understand and apply.
  • Scalability. It should be painless to add more team members, new projects, expand file storage and other issues that might arise as your business and demands grow.
  • Project Management. It all depends on your needs, what do you need from the software now? What you will need in a year or two? I would choose the system that has more to offer then your current needs are. Does the system have reporting functions? Does it have a project calendar? How to manage resources, time? Does it support task management? These are just a couple of questions that you should look into.
  • Collaboration.  First of all this means working with other team members on a task to reach a defined goal. In other words it's just day to day communication, and you'll want this to be as effective as possible - emails, blogs, video conferencing, intranets, extranets, todos etc.
  • Administration. Make sure you have easy- to use administrating features for users management, data import/export, integration with other systems.
  • Usable. Yes, just try it, get to know it, is it fast enough? User interface intuitive? Can you customize it for your needs? The easier it is to learn, the more you will get from it.
  • Support.  Last but not least, good product support is one of the most important factors, check the responsiveness and the attitude to users.

Many Comindwork users are using Basecamp and Comindwork together. Basecamp is often used for simple projects. While additional Comindwork features like enterprise wiki with permissions, tree-like file storage, multiple files upload and cases allow to manage projects which are more knowledge-intensive, communication-intensive or require higher management control over the process.

Today we released a new tool: "Import your projects from Basecamp"! From now on you can import your project from Basecamp into Comindwork and just continue your projects from the point you reached the limits in Basecamp. Even more - you can enable synchronization back to Basecamp, for example if your boss or clients are happy to see "just milestones" in Basecamp.

To test this feature - please just sign up to Comindwork and see "import from Basecamp" feature on the Welcome page.
